Virginia Crompton
Virginia draws and paints. She divides her time between the UK and Canada.
Introducing Virginia Crompton
Virginia’s practice is immediate, a spontaneous, direct connection, as engaged with time as with space, place and people. She paints from life - inside all four dimensions, as it is experienced.
Representing experience means tensions and imbalances between experience and reality, the past and present, individuals and beliefs, emotions and interpretations. Clashing vivid grounds both disrupt and give coherence to paintings. Brushstrokes and grounds are exposed, acknowledging the shared illusion.
Her work is produced in place, outside, inside, on the go in a car, train or plane, on the beach, by the river. Anywhere, but not in a studio.
Her art is specifically hers, and is in conversation with her subjects which always share a story with her - either easy to access or concealed within the painting, but it is always there. Surprising perspectives and decentralised composition represent life as it is lived, the good, the bad, the sad, each day.
